From Director's Desk
Globalization and the new
information technologies have created a new economic and social order:
the "Knowledge Society". The world has been revolutionized by the
unprecedented quantum of technological reforms and changes. The old
factors of production such as capital, labor and recourses have
largely been replaces with a new set of "Knowledge" related factors.
Currently, the role of a technical institute is not only to
disseminate and distribute knowledge but also to generate knowledge
and thus the responsibility of technical education has increased
manifold. In the knowledge society, institutional autonomy is a
minimum pre-requisite to ensure success. The challenges that lie ahead
of the technical education are to attain high academic standards, to
build skills towards solving problems and creating new solutions, to
work with and through others, to integrate concepts with applications
and to imbibe the culture of research and product development.
Creation of learning communities within the department and institute,
support to life-long learning and professional development of
engineers are the needs of today. This has been beautifully reflected
through a traditional Chinese sayings:
"A person who learns but does not think is lost",
"A person who thinks but does not learn is in great danger."
