Shri Guru Gobind Singhji Institute of Engineering and Technology (SGGS) was established in Nanded on December 17, 1981. Approved by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Government of India, the institute was registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 and received 100% funding from the Government of Maharashtra.
The Sant Baba Harnam Singh Langer Sahib Gurudwara trust, Nanded generously donated 46 acres of land for the institute, which is named after the 10th Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Gobind Singhji. The institute was initially governed by a Board led by the Director of Technical Education, Govt. of Maharashtra, with Prof. B.M. Naik taking over as the first full-time Principal in 1983. Since its inception, SGGS has grown significantly, establishing itself as a leading engineering institution. In 2004, SGGS was recognized for its excellence in a survey conducted by a committee led by Dr.
F.C. Kohli, Ex-Chairman of TCS. The findings were published in Business India (TOI), identifying SGGS as one of three institutes with significant potential for excellence. The Government of Maharashtra granted the institute full academic, financial, and administrative autonomy based on the recommendations of the Naik Committee report (as per GR No. WBP- 2001/(47/01)/TE-5 dated July 19, 2002). The Institute receives block grants from the Government of Maharashtra from time to time.
The governance of SGGS has seen leadership from prominent industrialists. Padma Bhushan Mr.
B.N. Kalyani, Chairman of the Kalyani Group, was appointed the first Governing Board Chairman (2004-2013). He was succeeded by Mr. Sunil Raithata, Chairman and MD of Vinodrai Engineers Pvt. Ltd., who served from 2016 to 2019. In March 2019, Mr. Rajesh Pawar assumed the responsibility of chairman, followed by the reappointment of Mr. Sunil Raithata in 2023, who continues to serve as Chairman. The Governing Board includes distinguished personalities from business, industry, academia, and senior government administration.
